The Swedish government has revoked the operating license of wet-lease operator Nordic Airways, after the airline's efforts to stay in business failed.
Nordic filed for reorganization in October, at which point the civil aviation authorities granted a temporary license lasting until Feb. 15, 2009. However, a court has denied the airline's request for an extension to its reorganization plans, prompting Nordic to file for bankruptcy on Friday and Swedish authorities to suspend the license.
The Swedish transport board said, "The company can no longer fulfill its commitments and obligations towards their passengers under the EC Regulation, which governs the conditions for operating licenses to airlines within the [European Union]."
In addition to wet least operations, Nordic Airways also ran a charter business. The airline also operates regular flights to Iraq. Some customers have been stranded in Iraq with the airline no longer flying.
