Aeroflot Confirms Interest In Czech Airlines

Aeroflot yesterday officially confirmed its interest in buying a 49% stake in its alliance partner CSA Czech Airlines.

“CSA is the largest and most stable airline in Central Europe in economic and market terms. By joining and mutually expanding their route networks, Aeroflot and CSA will be able to become more profitable,” says Aeroflot CEO Valery Okulov.

Russia’s largest carrier is still looking for a local partner in the Czech Republic, which would hold a majority stake in CSA to stay in line with European Union ownership limitations and says it will “be able to declare its choice shortly.” Aeroflot expects better access to European destinations and promises CSA more opportunities in Russia beyond Moscow.

If the deal is successful, CSA would be the second Central European carrier after Malev to be sold to a Russian investor. In addition, Austrian Airlines is in the process of being sold to Lufthansa. LOT Polish Airlines also is scheduled to be privatized this year.
