The European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has granted its type certificate to Embraer's Phenom 100 very light jet.

The type certificate approves operations of the Phenom 100 (EMB-500) not just in the European Union, but also in Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein.

Embraer has been working with European safety regulators since November 2005.

EASA's director of certification, Norbert Lohl notes that "the Phenom 100 is the first business jet in its category of aircraft where the full certification process fell under the responsibility of [EASA]."

EASA provided the type certification for the Pratt & Whitney Canada PW617F-E turbofans powering the Phenom 100 yesterday.

The aircraft is slated to enter service within the EU in May 2009.
