At comparable prices, if you could cut your travel time in half, and not have the general hassles of the full airport experience, wouldn't you do it? Hassle free, convenient, affordable, and most importantly-FAST. This is a new option in business and leisure travel. SeaPort offers daily scheduled flights in the Northwest and Mid-South like the old airlines, but with a notable absence of what makes flying today slow and miserable. How? Commercial air travel in today's climate is difficult at best. The airports are becoming more crowded, have longer lines and with the tighter budgets, speed and convenience seem like a thing of the past. Until now. The way travel was meant to be, with all the conveniences of private air travel, but without the big price tag. Isn't it about time? Donate Today From the XD's desk: City and County support KSLN The Saline County and the City of Salina have demonstrated their support for the growth and development of the SLN Aviation Service Center. Earlier this year, the Saline County Commissioners unanimously approved a resolution bringing Saline County into the service area of the Sedgwick County Foreign Trade Zone #161. The commissioners' action enables all current and future SLN Aviation Service Center businesses to take advantage of U.S. Foreign Trade benefits and cost savings. Just this past week, the Salina City Commission approved the expenditure of $3.5 million to upgrade water, sewer and fire protection services at the Salina Airport and Airport Industrial Center. The upgrades benefit current and future business at the Airport and Airport Industrial Center. By providing important infrastructure improvements the commissioners are setting the stage for future job growth. Working together, City and County elected officials are providing business and industry the means to both retain and add jobs in our community. A portion of future economic growth will occur with the development of the SLN Aviation Service Center. The continued support of the Saline County Commissioners and City of Salina Commissioners is appreciated. The Salina Airport Authority board of directors approved a resolution authorizing the sale of more than $14 million in G.O. bonds, at the May 18 board meeting. The bond issue will provide long-term financing for more than $1.5 million in authorized new projects, nearly $11.8 million in ongoing projects previously funded by temporary notes. New projects include more than $500,000 to rehabilitate Taxiway G and the Hangar 959, "Big Bertha," apron which will make the area usable for a new tenant after Hawker Beechcraft vacates the building. The Airport Authority will finance approximately $804,000 toward the construction of a new aircraft rescue and firefighting station. The Airport Authority funds will be matched by a Federal Aviation Administration grant. Site improvements valued at $100,000 on the west end of Beechcraft Rd are planned and $116,000 will go into relocating a water main near Vortex Rd to align the waterline and prepare the 17-acre lot for development. Kansas Highway Patrol presents certificate of appreciation to Salina Airport Troopers from the Kansas Highway Patrol Air Support Unit recognized the Salina Airport Authority maintenance crew for their outstanding assistance during the winter months with a certificate of appreciation, May 16 at the M. J. Kennedy Air Terminal Building. "The efforts of 'Gunner' Wiles and Loren Carleton are greatly appreciated" said East Region Commander Major Mark Goodlowe. "It is my understanding that these gentlemen ensure snow and ice are removed from the hangar door area. They have provided urea ice melt when necessary. They have assisted Technical Trooper Joe Ziegler in pushing the KHP aircraft into the hangar during the winter months when icy conditions did not permit the use of a tractor. I am extremely pleased to know that the relationship between the Kansas High Patrol and Salina Airport Authority is such that helpful assistance is offered when needed." The Kansas Highway Patrol and the Salina Airport Authority have always enjoyed a great partnership. The Kansas Highway Patrol Air Support Unit could be needed for a litany of circumstances regardless of weather or season. Howard + Helmer selected for 'Big Bertha' redesign The Salina Airport Authority board of directors approved a $218,994 design contract with the Wichita firm of Howard and Helmer Architecture, at the May 18 board meeting. The firm was selected in September 2010 as the best qualified firm to provide the design services for Hangar 959 renovations. Locally known as "Big Bertha," the hangar will be well-suited for narrow-body aircraft and maintenance, repair and overhaul operations use after the renovations are complete. Rehabilitation design will include rehabilitating the hangar doors to working order, installing infrared tube heating, insulation for reduced utility usage, improved lighting and upgrading the fire suppression system to meet current National Fire Protection Association standards. A good fit: FlightSafety, K-State connection helps students gain experience, jobs During the last decade, FlightSafey International and Kansas State University Salina have built a strong relationship. "FlightSafety's Wichita Learning Center currently employs six K-State Salina alumni -- two full-time employees, one part-time employee and three interns," said Rich High, manager of FlightSafety's Cessna Learning Center in Wichita. "This internship is a tremendous opportunity for our students," said Bill Gross, chief pilot with the K-State aviation program. "They learn two or three jets inside and out, backward and forward and get very good at it, which makes them ideal pilots for those aircraft. Because they become so good at those aircraft, companies are willing to hire them with lower flight time. The interns are well-positioned to get a job, as K-State alumni have a 100 percent hire rate after their FlightSafety internship ends." Kansas State University's Flight Team placed eighth at the National Intercollegiate Flying Association's National Safety And Flight Evaluation Conference and competition, May 16-21, hosted by The Ohio State University, Dublin, Ohio. The team won an invitation to the national competition by placing second in the Region VI SAFECON competition in October 2010. SAFECON consists of 13 total events. K-State Flight Team members earned nine individual placements in the Top 20 in six events: Ground Trainer, IFR Simulated Flight, Message Drop, Navigation, Power-off Landing, and Short-field landing. In the Ground Trainer event contestants fly a complex pattern of climbs, descents, and turns on a flight simulator. Scores are determined by the pilot's accuracy. Board approves financing for $1.5 M in new projects Cold, hard truth about aircraft icing While we are not going to get into the whole climate change thing, we can tell you that aircraft icing is a global phenomenon. And Europe certainly has its share of icing events. That's one reason that CAV Aerospace Inc. is exhibiting at AviationExpo Europe on Germany's Bitburg Airport, May 27-29.
Situated centrally in western Europe, Bitburg's location close to the borders of France, Belgium, Netherlands and Luxembourg makes it an ideal venue for the fourth AviationExpo Europe's Festival of Aviation. Some 73,000 pilots who fly 14,000 general aviation aircraft are within a two and a half hour drive from the German airfield.K-State flight team places eighth a national competition Lift Any attempt to stretch fuel is guaranteed to increase headwinds.
